Block 1949 Apartments in Tempe

A mile from ASU campus, located on University Dr, Block 1949 offers up to 650 student apartments. Ranging from one-bedroom lofts, to 4 bedroom apartments, Block 1949 has it all available. Block 1949 is an upscale apartment complex, with a laidback attitude. With a countless list of amenities, Block 1949 does it big with style.  Here is what I’ve put together after a year of living at Block 1949.

The rooms, fully furnished, are the best feature. They have thick carpets, thick walls, and thick solid doors. The doors are very solid, and there is no getting through them without a key. The rooms also feature a window that opens, and a ceiling fan. Every room has a cable jack, and an Ethernet port. The walk in closest is also very unique for student living. Very few, if any, student apartments feature a walk in closest this big. The bedroom is the best feature of living at Block 1949.

The living room is also furnished with a large flat screen TV mounted to the wall. A three-person couch with a footrest is what they use to furnish the living room. Keep that in mind when thinking about moving into a four-bedroom apartment, you might need to buy another chair. The entire living room and kitchen has hardwood style flooring, and I recommend a throw rug or two to make the apartment feel more like home. The kitchen comes with great granite counter tops. The sink comes divided with two sinks, one with a garbage disposal, and one with a normal drain. One minor inconvenience is the faucet is fixed to the sink, and does not extend out, which comes in handy while washing dishes, or filling up a Brita water filter. The kitchen, size wise, does have plenty of cabinet space. The refrigerator also has plenty of room for up to four people. The washer and dryer are also in a convenient spot, tucked away close to the kitchen.

Block 1949 has many other features available to the residents. The pool is located inside the courtyard, surrounded by apartments. The pool also has not one, but two hot tubs. There are a total of 4 grills that are open 24/7 for your convenience. Two grills are located next the pool, and two grills are located next to the volleyball court. Both sets of grills have an outdoor TV to watch while your food is cooking. In the other courtyard, they have a full volleyball court that even has sprinklers for the sand before you play. Also featured is a putting green, to practice your golf game. The Block 1949 also has a state of the art gym, and its own game room. Block 1949 also has a business center with both MAC and touch screen PC’s, and two small study rooms. Above the business center, there is a poker room, and a movie theater. This room closes at midnight, which I personally think is too early if you are playing poker, or watching a movie.

While all of these amenities are fantastic, the Block 1949 does have a few downsides. The location is a little far from campus, and it would have been great if the light rail was closer to the building. Block 1949 also has very few visitor parking spots, and they love to tow cars off the property. Living in a building with 600 other college students, things can get pretty crazy on the weekends. Therefore, the police, and security guards have a strong presence around Block 1949 on the weekends, just like any other student apartments. The cable service at Block 1949 has a lot to be desired as well. They provide a cable and Internet service called APOGEE. The basic cable is missing a lot of channels, and the only way to get more channels is to upgrade through APOGEE for over $100 a month. There is no possibility to get COX because they do not have a contract with Block 1949.

Block 1949 also lets its residents have pets up to 35-40 pounds. This is something to keep in mind, even if you don’t want a pet. Other people are bound to have pets, and that means barking and dog feces around the complex at all times. Block 1949 also has a garbage pickup, where every day at 6pm they are supposed to collect garbage from outside your room. However, many days the garbage does not get picked up, and the entire property turns into a trashcan with garbage all over the halls. Between dog feces and garbage, the hallways are pretty gross.

Block 1949 definitely has its ups, and downs. It’s a great place to live for a first apartment. The rooms are the best feature about Block 1949. It is a little far from campus, but it’s not too bad. The pool and other amenities are definitely some of the best around town. I would love it if they would add more visitor parking, and I wish they would tow cars less frequently. Block 1949 is a fun place to live, but do your homework before making the final choice to sign a lease!
